Reporting and MIS

Why this matters

Management reporting and related management information systems (MIS) have one clear objective: creating transparency for management. Company decision makers have to be provided with the information they need to manage the business. This core task of controlling is an evergreen for CFOs, controllers and not least management as the client of the controlling function. The design, redesign or optimisation of reporting and MIS are currently of great interest for several reasons:

  • As strategies and management approaches change, related objectives, metrics, responsibilities, processes and systems also change. This has to be reflected in adjustments to reporting and MIS.
  • Different companies use reporting in different ways. Its benefits are similarly heterogeneous, making it necessary to tune it to requirements.
  • When management reporting is slower or of lower quality than expected, reporting processes have to be optimised.

Challenges

The resulting challenges are just as diverse. They include:

  • Interlinking reporting with strategy and the management approach
  • Devising reporting content and preparing it when required and as required by the recipients
  • Implementing data models, value flows and systems
  • Anchoring reporting in management decision processes.

Targeted, efficient management reporting that is actively used, combined with matching MIS, are cornerstones of successful management.
